Debates: U.S. Senate = Yes; Gubernatorial = No; Supreme Court Chief Justice = Maybe

October 1, 2022

Several recent polls show a statistical dead heat between Congressman Tim Ryan and J.D. Vance: Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is leading Republican J.D. Vance by 3 percentage points, according to a new Spectrum News-Siena College poll. 46% of likely Ohio voters indicated support for Ryan, compared to 43% who said they would vote for Vance, a gap within the poll’s margin of error with 9% said they didn’t know or had no opinion. A Marist College poll shows Vance up on Ryan 46% – 45% with a 3.6% margin of error. The same Marist College poll shows Vance up on Ryan 48% – 47% among voters who plan to definitely vote. The poll also showed Ohioans have a 40% favorable view of Ryan, 25% have an unfavorable view with 35% not sure compared to 30% having a favorable view of Vance, 36% unfavorable view and 34% unsure. Ryan leads 42% – 40% among unaffiliated voters.

Ohio Republicans now what to gerrymander Ohio’s Appeals Court district lines

September 21, 2022

Following knock-down, drag-out fights over congressional and legislative maps, Republican lawmakers are turning their attention to redrawing the state’s appellate court district lines − either this year or next legislative session.

ACLU of Ohio creates a candidate profile for Supreme Court of Ohio races

September 20, 2022

Our core freedoms are a stake – and the November elections will shape the future of our state. All Ohioans must vote like their rights depend on it – because they do. The ACLU of Ohio has created a candidate profile, the first-of-its-kind, for the Ohio Supreme Court races.

Why you should be paying attention to Ohio Board of Education races

September 10, 2022

The midterms will decide more than just Ohio’s races for U.S. Senate, governor and state lawmakers. The State Board of Education in Ohio has five seats open, and with education policy emerging as a topic of discussion the past year, educators are urging more people to learn why these races are important. NOTE: Erie County is located in the 2nd District for State Board of Education. Democratic Candidate is Teresa Fedor.

No Debate for Ohio House – 89th District

August 30, 2022

DJ Swearingen should be held publicly accountable for his votes and his cowardice. He doesn’t have the political courage to tell area residents how he has voted for no permit, no training, no background checks for sensible and safe gun ownership; voted to reduce training to 12 hours for armed school employees including teachers; co-sponsored law to allow children – in particular girls – who play sports to have forced internal and external genital inspections without their parents consent; co-sponsored law to allow for more vaccine mandate exemptions for students/employees to name a few. Unfortunately, DJ won’t provide his own case to Erie Countians as he seeks re-election to the State House – 89th District. Jim Obergefell, Democratic candidate, fundamentally opposes all of this legislation.

Ohio GOP ignore Ohio Supreme Court deadlines for new maps signaling they won’t draw new maps

August 22, 2022

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The battle over redistricting continues as the Ohio Supreme Court rejected a second Republican-drawn map of U.S. House (congressional) districts as gerrymandered on Tuesday, sending it back for a third attempt to meet constitutional parameters approved by Ohio voters. The deadline for the General Assembly to draw a constitutional congressional map has passed – August 18. Now the Redistricting Commission has until September 17 to draw a new congressional map.

BY THE NUMBERS & FACT SHEETS: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022

August 19, 2022

The Inflation Reduction Act will lower costs for families, combat the climate crisis, reduce the deficit, and finally ask the largest corporations to pay their fair share. President Biden and Congressional Democrats have worked together to deliver a historic legislative achievement that defeats special interests, delivers for American families, and grows the economy from the bottom up and middle out.

As SCOTUS agrees to hear Moore v. Harper, why it is potentially dangerous

July 6, 2022

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider Moore v. Harper during their next term in the fall. Even though the majority of the Ohio Supreme Court decided not to hold the Ohio Redistricting Commission republican members’ feet to the fire on two requests for contempt charges, the Ohio Supreme Court has rejected all the maps submitted by the republican majority on the commission as invalid, illegal and unconstitutional. This case would allow the state legislature to draw maps that would be illegal and not subject to state court review.

Redistricting continues with some good news

June 30, 2022

The Ohio Supreme Court decided not to hold the republican majority members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission in contempt without any comment. Lawsuits are still pending with the Ohio Supreme Court over congressional maps, but will not be impacting the 2022 election cycle. Even though this news is disappointing to say the least, the Ohio Supreme Court did provide some good news: Eight Democratic candidates running for state legislature seats were placed on the August 2 ballot despite Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose claiming they had filed their petitions too late.

Ohioans will have second Primary August 2 with unconstitutional maps

May 30, 2022

A federal court has now set the second primary for Ohio on August 2nd, 2022. This election will include state legislative candidates (State House and State Senate) as well as State Central Committee members. There may also be local issues on your ballot. Between what the state has already provided for funds to county Boards of Elections and what will likely be needed for the second primary, the total price tag to Ohio taxpayers will be in the neighborhood of $30 Million. This is a complete waste of taxpayers dollars thanks to the republican party who calls itself the party of fiscal responsibility.
