Our core freedoms are a stake – and the November elections will shape the future of our state. All Ohioans must vote like their rights depend on it – because they do. The ACLU of Ohio has created a candidate profile, the first-of-its-kind, for the Ohio Supreme Court races.

To underscore the importance of Supreme Court of Ohio races, in particular, we created a first-of-its-kind Candidate Profile, showing the candidates’ judicial record on issues ACLU voters care about most: abortion, redistricting, bail reform, and criminal sentencing.

The Supreme Court of Ohio is the final word on almost every question of Ohio law. There are three seats available this November, and for the first time, the candidates’ party affiliations will be listed on the ballot. The ACLU of Ohio does not endorse or oppose candidates for office, but we do want voters to be informed about candidates’ positions on key civil liberties issues.

Here are the match-ups:

• Justice Jennifer Brunner (D) v. Justice Sharon Kennedy (R) (For the Chief Justice seat)
• Judge Terri Jamison (D) v. Justice Pat DeWine (R)
• Judge Marilyn Zayas (D) v. Justice Pat Fischer (R)

In addition to creating the new profile piece, we sent a questionnaire to all six candidates; however, after repeated attempts, we only received responses from Justice Brunner, Judge Jamison, and Judge Zayas. You can read their responses on our website.
