My time in office has been focused on ‘small town values’ such as being invested in the community and understanding the needs of people who want opportunities to ‘get ahead.’ These are the values I will bring to Columbus, if I were to become state treasurer. You’re going to have a sure thing because I am going to watch every dollar spent, and I’m going to pinch every penny. And I’m also going to be on the lookout for corruption. I’m running for State Treasurer of Ohio to work for Ohioans like you.

I’m running for State Treasurer of Ohio to work for Ohioans like you.
I grew up in Marion, where small town values mean everything.
It’s where I graduated from Ridgedale High School, and it’s why I returned to my hometown after earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education nearby at the University of Toledo.
For 13 years, as a classroom teacher, I watched generations of young people in Marion study and work hard for a fair shot at a good life, and I knew many of them wanted to continue to live and raise their families in our wonderful community.
Before teaching, I had worked in public service for the legendary State Treasurer of Ohio Mary Ellen Withrow, who grew up in Marion. Withrow was an inspiration to us all, becoming the 40th Treasurer of the United States, and she was instrumental in developing my commitment to integrity and transparency in public service.
So I ran for public office in my hometown, and after nine years on City Council, I was elected Mayor in 2008.
This was a dream come true for my wife, Ann, and me. We love our small town. It’s where we raised our two daughters, Sydney and Olivia, where I’ve been a lifelong member of the Marion First Presbyterian Church, and where I have been involved with dozens of local organizations.
Over the next 15 years, being elected four times, I helped lead Marion through the Great Recession, the opioid epidemic that devastated small towns like ours across the state, and now the COVID-19 epidemic.
I was blessed with the chance to be president of the Ohio Municipal League in 2018, where I met and talked to small, medium and big city mayors like myself about challenges and solutions facing our cities.
As mayor, you get a spoonful of reality with each morning cup of coffee. You face the problems and the challenges in your community because you feel them first hand through your family, your friends and your neighbors. There’s no room for grandstanding, playing politics or empty rhetoric. You have to roll up your sleeves and go to work every day because there is no going home until the job is done.
In Marion, like in so many towns across Ohio, things get done with collaboration and cooperation. We are a community of good people who just want to do what’s right for their families. We have different opinions, but know that what we have in common, far outweighs our differences.
These same values are found all across Ohio, and we need to make sure they are reflected in our leaders that we send to Columbus.
I’ll take that same approach to the State Treasurer’s office. That’s my promise to you.
That’s why I hope you will take the time to get to know me better, to understand I share the same concerns and dreams you do for our families, our communities and our state.
We have suffered from a culture of corruption in Columbus, but as mayor I didn’t have time to focus on the negative and as State Treasurer there is too much positive work to be done to mire ourselves in the muck of the past 25 years of leaders who looked out only for themselves.
You deserve a State Treasurer who will watch over every dollar invested by the state and pinch every penny.
You deserve a State Treasurer you can trust will do the job and get the job done right.
Please join me in changing Ohio for the better.
